Chapter Twenty

Clara stepped outside the hotel alongside Mattie and inhaled a deep breath of fresh air. She leaned against the wooden post and watched children kick a ball back and forth in the road.

“What a beautiful day,” Mattie said. “I’m glad you talked me into taking a break.”

“You work too hard.”

“An old woman like me doesn’t have anything else to do. Besides, I like cooking.”

Clara closed her eyes for a moment and soaked in the warm rays of the sun on her face. “I never thought I could feel so tired and satisfied all at the same time.”

“Well, spending the night with a handsome young buck like Jesse Wild will do it every time.” Mattie elbowed her in the side and laughed.

Clara had no doubt her cheeks were rose-colored. “Mattie, stop it. You’re embarrassing me.” The sound of men yelling drew her attention toward the Starlight. Cowboys laughed and slapped each other on the back as they walked out of Reba’s place. A soiled dove in a scanty outfit ran out to a wrangler, put her arms around his neck, and kissed him. The men mounted their horses and congratulated themselves on their choice of women. They hollered, fired their guns into the air, and raced out of town.

“Looks like someone is having a good time today,” Mattie said. “Maybe in my next life I’ll be one of those high-dollar ladies.”

Clara gasped. “You can’t be serious.”

“I’m just teasing. Say, isn’t that Jesse who just walked out of Ginny’s Saloon.”

Clara bent over the railing to get a better look. “Yes, that’s him.” He was walking in the direction of the Starlight. She glanced over at Mattie, who was frowning.

“I’m going in to finish the last couple of pies. Why don’t you go talk to him?” Mattie turned and went inside the hotel.

Clara watched Jesse cross the street to the Starlight. He tipped his hat to a beautiful blonde-haired woman leaning out the upstairs window to wave a handkerchief at him. Clara choked back a cry when he disappeared inside the building. It was obvious she hadn’t satisfied Jesse last night after all, for he was already seeking out a more experienced woman. He had spared her feelings when he told her she’d been perfect. Clara held her temper. She didn’t understand his needs. Still, she couldn’t help but feel jealous toward this other woman. She would never let Jesse touch her again. She should have listened to her aunt’s warnings. He deceived her.

Clara turned to head back into the hotel when two riders galloping down the street drew her attention. Fear knotted her stomach. Miguel Black and another man with a patch over one eye dismounted from their horses and walked into the Starlight.

“Snake Eye,” she whispered. He was the man Jesse had the gunfight with at the stage stop. The same outlaw who had shot at her. A sense of dread filled her. She rushed down the street toward the Starlight. Even though she was upset with Jesse, she had to warn him.
